Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is a doula, and what do they do?
A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to expectant parents before, during, and after childbirth. They do not provide medical care but focus on offering guidance, comfort, and advocacy to make the birthing experience as positive as possible.
-
What is the difference between a birth doula and a postpartum doula?
A birth doula primarily supports expectant parents during labor and childbirth, while a postpartum doula provides assistance and guidance during the postpartum period, typically the first few weeks after birth. Birth doulas focus on labor support, while postpartum doulas help with newborn care, breastfeeding support, and parental well-being.
-
When should I hire a postpartum doula, and how do I choose the right one for me?
It's a good idea to hire a postpartum doula during your pregnancy to establish a relationship and receive support throughout the journey. To choose the right doula, consider factors like their experience, philosophy, availability, and compatibility with your birth plan and personality.
-
What should I know before booking a consult?
It’s really important for me to meet you AND your birthing partner so please pick a time when you can both join the zoom call.
On our call, my partner Beth and I will ask you some questions about your pregnancy thus far, your interest in hiring a doula and how you're feeling with your choice of healthcare provider. We will introduce ourselves and outline our package and answer any questions you have!
-
What are your fees?
You can check out my fees here! I can provide a pay what you can model upon request, please refer to my fees and services page for more information.
-
How does the pay model work with a doula?
50% of the total cost is due at contract signing and the remaining 50% is due in the third trimester. For postpartum 50% is due at contract signing and the remainder is due before the first visit. Other payment plans can be made!
-
How many clients do you take per month?
I take 3-4 birth clients and one postpartum client per month.
-
Do I have to book lactation consultations in advance?
Not necessarily! These can be one off services, so message me when you need me! Lactation consults can be virtual or in person.
-
How do you ensure the safety of my newborn in terms of COVID?
I am fully vaccinated, boosted, and am happy to mask around you and your newborn. If I am sick, I will let you know and we will reschedule the appointment or if you’d like a backup, I will work on finding a backup for you.
-
Are you still offering Wednesday night birth education classes?
My live courses are no longer available on Wednesday evenings, but they are available for download. I am still offering private virtual birth classes.
-
How can I best prepare for my postpartum period besides education?
I encourage all my clients to sign up for my six week, virtual postpartum support group, BeHeld! or another postpartum group. I do NOT recommend doing postpartum in isolation.
If you see a therapist, don’t pause your sessions while postpartum. If you have a history of anxiety, depression or other mental health concerns and do NOT have a therapist, I recommend getting that in place before the stresses and hormones of postpartum come along.. I highly recommend Brooklyn Parent Support.
I’d also recommend finding a virgo or capricorn in your life to set you up with a meal train. Set it up to being one month after your due date, by then you will have burned through your freezer meals and will be ready to see your friends smiley faces as they deliver meals to your door and hold your baby while you eat/shower or nap.
